Safety on the Rifle Range is provided by three main rules:

  • The bolt is removed from all firearms at all times.   The bolt is only placed in the rifle when about to fire.   After a stage of firing, the bolt is removed and the breach of the rifle is presented to the Scorer.   The Scorer looks through the barrel, from the breach end, and confirms that the barrel is "clear".

  • Before the rifle is fired at the start of the day, a "bolt cycle" test is carried out. The bolt is closed and the rifle aimed down range and dry fired, to show that the sear is safely holding back the firing pin.

  • During firing, the bolt is only closed on the live round when the rifle is in the shoulder, pointing at the target.   This prevents people from firing outside the safety template.

Red Danger Flags. There are three red danger flags on the range:

  • Flag 1.   At the entrance to the range. This shows that shooting is in progress, you should proceed with caution.

  • Flag 2.   At the firing point. This shows where shooting is actually taking place,  do not proceed in front of this point.

  • Flag 3.   At the butts area. This shows where bullets are arriving.   There is an extensive safety template behind the butts area which is clearly sign posted, do not venture into this area either.
