Club Goals 2011 - 2012

  • Support and develop temporary members

  • Increase members Team involvement

  • Promote competition in Open Competition

  • Visit other ranges.

Activity 1: Prospective Members.

Function 1: NSDRA Christmas Shoot.        500/600 m                                   early in December each year

This is "closed" shoot, with only NSDRA members allowed to actually shoot.   It is run as a relaxed Christmas family event, and provides a great opportunity for the beginning member to experience this level of competition.

Starting at 1.00 pm with a walk up start at 500m (2 sighters +10 shots), the second range is 600m (1 sighters +11 shots) to give a total out of 105.   The two ranges finish at about 3.30 pm.

Members then retire to clubhouses for Christmas festivities.   The NSDRA announce and distributes prizes at about 4.00 pm and SANTA arrives on the Range, (in a fire truck or police car) with gifts for the youngsters. (Contact Hornsby Rifle Club if you wish to be involved here.)

We hold our own competition with the club. Each person who has shot on the day contributes a wrapped gift which is placed on a table.  Winner for the day has first choice of the table, then on down through the scores, so that every shooter wins a prize on the day. We also hold a "bring a plate" or "BBQ" after the shoot, with friends, family, partners, husbands, wives, RSL members, markers, members, associate members .......everyone involved in the club is invited to celebrate with us on this day, we kick off around 4.00 pm.

Function 2: Hornsby RSL Rifle Club Presentation Day.            around October each year

As recognition of the efforts and scores gained  through the year we hold an Annual Presentation Day.   There is a large array of trophies and awards that are presented to members by official guests from the Hornsby RSL Club, the Hornsby RSL Youth Club, the NSDRA and Captains of other Rifle Clubs. Dates are on the Range Program. (on "program" page).

To reward steady week by week improvement there are Monthly Medals, based on a handicap system, outlined below.   (As in all clubs, the actual method of handicapping is just as fiercely debated as the competition for the actual medals.)

Also keenly sought are the "possible" badges awarded for a perfect score of 100:

double possible 100 out of 100 badge

and the NSWRA medal presented to a member of each club each year:

Function 3: Hornsby RSL Rifle Club Annual General Meeting.              late June each year

The Annual AGM is called to elect the office bearers and Committee members for this Club. It occurs during the June break when NSDRA long range shooting halts. This also coincides well with the financial shooting year, which extends from the start of May to the end of April each year.   Membership fees and audit of the club accounts are due at the end of April.

All members should attend the Annual General Meeting of the Rifle Club. As a Sub Club of Hornsby RSL we always have a Member of the Board of the RSL present at this meeting. Business (such as changes to Firearms Legislation) and decisions made at an AGM apply to all members. It is important that you be there.

Function 4: Hornsby RSL Rifle Club Open Day.

Originally the various RSL Rifle Clubs in and around Sydney (as far away as Port Macquarie) met through the year for an Inter RSL Competition, each club taking turns to host the shoot.

When this stopped happening, this HRSL R/C range booking on Hornsby range became available for other club activities and has been used as:

  • Open day:   With ads in the RSL and Newspapers inviting visitors to the range.

  • Coaching Day:   Beginners and new members were given Coaching sessions.

  • Team Day:   Team members each zeroed their elevation and wind sight settings.

  • Diggers Day:   With prizes for the best .303 scores for the day.

With changes to the firearms laws since then, visitors are now able to shoot following successful completion of a P650 form. However to allow a group of visitors to use firearms under instruction, on a day such as those above, still requires a special Police Permit.
